In the “American Melting Pot” film series, we will introduce you to some the various cultures and people that make up the United States.  We hope you will enjoy these films and that they will give you a better understanding of the values and characteristics of American society.  We will screen these films and have an open and friendly discussion following the movie the first and third Thursday of each month at 6:30pm at the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai (1376 Nanjing West Road, East Office Building, 5th Floor, Room 540).

Since September 21, 2008 IAESTE China is having an open house per two weeks time to welcome new members and non members to know more about IAESTE China and how to be involved in the various activities.
 
Tonight, October 10, 2008 is our second time to open the office to new comers and 20 students were coming from Shanghai University, Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, East China University of Science and Technology, Tongji University and so on.

Employer's report

Congratulations for Cai Yifei for the appraisal for his outstanding performance during the IAESTE internship in UK!

 

We are pleased to share this good news with all of you.

Earlier today we received the Employer’s report (Durham University, UK) for Cai Yifei (Shanghai University), who went to UK for an IAESTE internship during the previous summer (http://www.iaeste-china.org/student/studentReport.asp?id=485 ).

 

Moreover, his over all performance was marked as excellent, including his relation with others, attitude to work, ability to learn, flexibility and motivation.

In addition, Cai Yifei was working on light pulse propagation through a gas and showed that the pulse travels at only one hundred of the speed of light (so called slow light). He also showed that the pulse could be broken into two by applying a magnetic field. His work will contribute to a publication, which the university will prepare when they have more quantitative data.

 

The professor also mentioned that Cai Yifei had been working very hard and was extremely enthusiastic and cooperative during this internship.

So far they have received five IAESTE students and Cai Yifei is one of the student from China who has been outstanding!

Scotland and China form closer student links

Scotland and China are developing closer links via a science-based student exchange programme.

Students from both countries have started arriving in their host cities prior to starting their three month British Council International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) placements.

The Scottish government's Chief Scientific Office is funding five placements for Chinese students in an exchange that also sees five students from Scotland travel to China for work placements.

The Chinese students visit has been made possible after the announcement in April by Fiona Hyslop, ‘Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning’ to fund the placements of Chinese students in order to enhance links between the two countries.

The students from China will be taking up placements with Fisheries Research Services in Aberdeen, Scottish Agricultural Science Agency in Edinburgh and the Edinburgh International Science Festival. Students from Scotland will be working with Innovalue Design in Chang Zhou, Yantai Wanhua in Beijing, and the Harbin Institute for Technology.

Former IAESTE participant Scott Hutchison – who studied with Innovalue Design himself last year - gave the Scottish participants a presentation prior to their departure for China.

He said about the programme: ‘Through IAESTE I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to travel and work in China. The experience was incredible; it exceeded all of my expectations and has made me reconsider what I value in life. It was very exciting and humbling to work in a developing country and live with the Chinese people and their culture’.

The placements are coordinated by IAESTE (The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) a global work experience programme that arranges paid placements for undergraduate students studying science, engineering and architecture.

IAESTE is managed in the UK by the British Council as part of an international association of over 85 member countries.

Experience being interviewed by Microsoft

Hi,
Following is my experiences in Microsoft interview.
I've been interviewed for 3 times, talked with 3 interviewers, but all these
interviews were similar.
First it would be a programming question, ask me to write code, and then
they should ask me questions about testing, e.g. wrote the test case for the
program you just wrote.  Finally they let me to ask them questions.
The first interview went on well, the interviewer is American, and of course
his English is pretty good.  The coding problem is to convert Bin string to
Hex string, I did it just so so, but during programming, we made good
communication, I explained every thing I wrote on the screen, he seem
satisfied with that.  Also he said my test cases were pretty good.  We had a
pleasant conversation about Microsoft's tech. and about Denmark.  After
that, he told me I would have another 2 interviews, I was so happy and wrote
to you immediately.
Next interviewer is Denish, the coding problem is about link list.  I think
I had done it pretty good, and he also said so.  He said my test case were
also good, and we talked about tech and something else.  But there were some
conflicts during the conversation, the network connection broke for a short
time, and I said I can't see what you had typed on the screen, he can't
indentify my pronunciation of "can" and "can't".  I remebered American
indentified them by stress, if the stress is in "ca" it should be "can't",
otherwise if the stess is in the verb after "can", it should be "can".  I
tried to pronunce them that way, but I don't know whether there was
something wrong with my accent, he can't understand.  These things happened
some times during the conversation.
The last interviewer seem in charge of the internship program, but I didn't
know it at that time.  He sent me the rejection letter today.  He was not as
voluble as the formers.  Because this interview was immediately after the
second one, I felt tired.  I think I have not had good performance.  The
coding problem was really easy, but once you felt it easy, it seem you had
not got the point of that.  I had finished this question just using 5-6
lines, but I think there were something I had missed.  Later, I found I had
not added examining conditions I added them.  I was really confused and
felt uncomfortable that he had not made any comment during the interview,
never said right or wrong, good or bad.  And his English was not easy to
understand, we had made a lot of misunderstandings.  Finally, he
misunderstood my question, I ask him, I found that your team didn't just
have testers, but also developers, program managers,...  is it right?  It
wasferent from other companies.  He read my question as "Do you have other
positions rather than tester?"  I think that was so bad...
After all, I would summarize my interviews.  I think the disadvantiges about
me is mainly:
1. English is not perfect.  You know, to communicate with native speakers is
a litter bit easier, because I can understand them well and they also
understand me well.  For example, if an American speaks Chinese, we may
understand each other well.  But if a Japanese speaks Chinese with an
American, they might be in troubles.
2. Althrough my algorithms might be good, the language I chose is C, because
it's my favorate programming language, and it's easier to wrote good
algorithms in C.  But they required OO programming language, especially C++
or C#, also during the interview, they asked me to use what ever language I
like, I think it might be negative effects on using C.
3. I don't know... I write them to ask about suggestion on what should I
improve in the future, but I don't think they are willing to reply.
Anyway, it's really a wonderful experience, althrough I have not got
through, I think I've learned a lot and I feel more confident in future
study.

Chinese and Western Learning Approach

Chinese and Western Learning Approach

Western managers working in China experience some big differences from running a business at home. One really big difference that most Western managers perceive is the lack of assertiveness and accountability in the workplace. Learning speed is perceived to be high in China but employees sometimes fail to see the full picture, which is required for making appropriate corrections and improvements. From our research, the traditional Western management style proves ineffective in China and often results in managers being misunderstood in their efforts to rectify behavioral differences.

When asked what creates a professional attitude at work, Western managers mainly describe behaviors and values related to assertiveness and accountability. These behaviors and how they are expressed in Western cultures differ strongly from how they are expressed in Chinese culture. The main Chinese values that conflict with the Western perception of a professional attitude are harmony, hierarchy and power distance. This conflict in values and the expression of behaviors related to them make the communication of Western managers with their employees in China a delicate matter. The likelihood of misunderstandings and friction is immense and almost impossible to avoid.

In addition, these values reflect upon the way Western and Chinese employees learn and gather necessary information in the work place. Western employees gather information by asking questions: Why: Define context What: Define outcome When: Define timeline Who: Define resources/responsibility How: Define methodology

 Chinese employees (especially new or inexperienced ones) learn and gather information by: Listening: Wait for instruction and direction Looking: Model successful behavior Learning: Humble approach to new tasks

This difference necessitates area change in the approach to managing Chinese staff at the beginning of their career in a western company. We suggest two steps for Western managers to approach this dilemma. First, as a Western manager, try to acquire cross-cultural understanding to be able to level with Chinese staff. Second, we suggest using the well known, but seldom used, Situational Leadership model, to be able to communicate effectively and develop the required corporate culture that will lead to desired results.

The Situational Leadership model effectively describes people management and group development. The first of the four stages suggest that at the beginning of a relationship with a new employee or formation of a team, the manager shall, or is even expected to, be direct and instructive in his management style, see picture. The model then suggests that the managers adopt a judging management style and then move toward becoming more of a coach when the employee or team matures. Finally, the employee or team reaches a stage of innovation when entering its cohesive phase and will thus need very little input from the manager to function or even develop the workplace.

Most Western managers try to start coaching and supporting their employees too early, since most managers consider telling and judging management styles to be reflective of micro-managing, and inefficient. We believe that the ambition to coach and support staff is correct. However, it is crucial to consider the conflicting values within the Western and Chinese cultures in order to speed up the development process and use coaching effectively. When the conflicting cultural values are considered with insight and consideration, Western managers will not only speed up the process of getting themselves, their teams and employees to work more efficiently together, they will, in addition, be able to incorporate the strengths and values within Chinese culture into their western corporate culture. 关于东西方文化中人的价值比较——By Jinbocheng

2008年4月14日,我和一位来自俄罗斯的女孩玛丽亚Maria在IAESTE办公室聊了两个小时。

玛丽亚已经在上海的一家美容院实习了近半年了,可是她并不快乐,她要辞职。玛丽亚告诉我,在这半年中,她经常被公司安排在接待处工作,和客人们说着简单的"你好,再见"的中文。

"Jin, this is not good to my professional knowledge," Maria said,
"They even asked me to teach some staff English, but I'm not a teacher
at all."

("Jin,这对我的专业知识不好",玛丽亚说道,"他们甚至让我去教一些员工英语,可是我却根本不是一个教师。")

于是亲爱的fanfan,请我写一篇文章,来说明"雇主对外国学生的责任",让我把能想到的要点列出来,以及作为观察者,来描述对这一个冲突的理解。

我在德国待的半年里,雇主是University of Freiburg的机械学院院长,Professor Wilde.

第一次见到Professor Wilde的时候,他刚从瑞士参加国际会议回来,风尘仆仆。那时我已在德国待了一个月了。我心里是不安定的,因为我听闻他的火爆脾气已久(后来我曾亲眼看到他把一个不厌其烦打搅他的变态学生用连环脚踢出办公室)。我小心翼翼地做了自我介绍,胆战兢兢地伸出手想和他握手,Wilde教授的手温暖而又有力。

第二天一大早,Wilde教授和我面谈了10分钟。"Jin,我看了你所学过的所有课程。配合我们实验室现有的项目,我昨天晚上为你准备了五个可以选择的课题,"他说道,"不过在这之前,我想听听你在德国想学些什么?"

于是我告诉他我所感兴趣的:"教授,我想能否学一些有关纳米机械的东西。"

"啊!。。。那真是太棒了。那么,我猜这五个课题没有必要看了,就是纳米机械了!"

在其后漫长的纳米机械设计和制造的过程中,教授每周一开全体教职工会议的时候,总要用10分钟和大家讨论关于我的课题的进展,以及Jin除了做自己的课题外,还能在别的教研组中的哪些地方发挥余热。于是嗷嗷待哺的我的人生处处充满了新的历险。

有一次,我要去净池实验室为我设计的纳米芯片"开刀"。由于芯片是我到荷兰的公司做的,也花了教授很大的项目费,所以每一片都格外珍惜。于是我先和教授讨论开刀方案。我和教授发生了争执。我说这里的粒子轨道应该向左开,教授说应该向右开。我坚持己见。最后他说,那就按照你的意思吧,这种方法虽然是弯路,但是充满了经验,那样,你会学到如何正确地进行试验的。我犹豫了,"教授,这个很贵的,错了不能改了。"

"Jin, I may not agree with you, but I definitely support you."

(Jin,我也许不同意你的观点,但我绝对支持你。)

从那以后,每次我想到关于价值和价格的事情,Wilde的这句话总是会出现在我的耳边。

中国的企业太多不会做价值,如果把外国学生当作工具使用,外国学生自然不乐意。IAESTE的学生是为技术经验而来,他们不是劳务输入。

我们的责任,教育,毕竟应该多于利用。

我走出门去,在教授的门口停下,把书包和电脑放在门口地板上。敲门,推开门。Wilde侧面对着我,正在用英语大声地打电话。他左脚搁在桌沿上,拿着电话的左手支撑在左边的膝盖上。他看到我进来,对着电话说了句"Hold
on". 他转向我,左手依旧拿着电话,伸出右手,对着我翘起大拇指,非常大声地说道:"GUT LUCK!!"
同时用力点了一下头,又说:"恩!!"

我情难自控。我想起他和我所说"Jin, I may not agree with you, but I will definitely support you." 以及他每一个细微场合的"In English please, we have got Jin here."
这两个细节让我永远记住这位睿智且善解人意的Professor Wilde。于是我一个九十度的鞠躬就这样深深地弯了下去。

我直起腰,惊讶地发现Wilde和我保持着同样的姿势。。 他也直起腰,我们都笑了。他又朝我做出翘大拇指的动作。

我轻轻地为他带上门。

我清晰地听到他对着电话说"Hey"的声音。

Arrival in Shanghai

Arrival in Shanghai ,I was a little bit nervous if I would be picked up in the airport or not, because i got no information about my accommodation prior my arrival in China. Upon arrival I found out that my luggage did not arrive. Unluckily, I got one of my suitcases one month later. Fortunately, there was a volunteer from Iaeste in the airport who picked me up and helped me on my first day in China.


 

Accommodation

During my three month Internship, I stayed in a flat with a lot of foreign interns from different countries .I shared a room with some of them and we also worked in the same office. At home and work, all my colleagues and flatmates were very friendly and they were always ready to help me when I had any problems or questions.


 

Working

My internship can be divided in 3 parts. Firstly, I spent almost a month in ID-Signet, local company for software development. I worked for the Pk-Me project with the other foreign interns and I prepared documentation for this project. The second month, I changed my job and come to iaeste. In Iaeste office my new responsibility was updating of the iaeste's web page. This job was very different from the first one because it was challenging and required team work and generating new ideas which I found very interesting. During the last month I created a New-year video which was my most interesting part of my internship in China. We are design our own video only our opinion so I know that this is unforgettable experience in my life. During my short  internship I had the chance to learn new things and I have opportunity to use and apply them. After getting back home I find that my internship in China was a very useful experience.


 

Culture, Life,...

China is very different from Europe a lot of issues and I have seen things both better and worse than in my home country and Europe. I live in Germany since 5 years, because I study there, but i am Turkish.  So, I had the chance to experience different cultures. I recognize that Turkey is not just geographic bridge between continental but also the bridge between different cultures, traditions  and lifestyles. I gained a valuable experience there, which changed my way of thinking and taking decisions.


 

Trips

In my free time, I visited the nearby cities of Hangzhou, Suzhou, Changzhou and Nanxun. During these trips I learned many things about culture, religion and life in China and I saw many public garden, temples, unbelievable skyscraper which let me know more about the historical-modern China. During these trips, I took many pictures and  videos which I can show to my family and friends when I go back home.

Finally, living in China was a big chance and important experience for me . These few months, were the most interesting longer period of my life.

绝望之为虚妄,正与希望同在

 

        Peter Lee学长的经历听来真是曲折的不能再艰辛了,看着这个在废墟后重生,无数打击后站起来的男子,让人心中充满敬意。

        Peter是上海大学的物理研究生,从20049月开始加入爱因斯特,申请奥地利维也纳的offer,到突然间雇主的cancel7月新的美国offer成型,7月底又被cancelPeter没有放弃,他说材料准备的过程更是一个很好认识自我的过程。2005年他以志愿者的名义加入爱因斯特,从力所能及的地方开始积累能力和经验,看不见的机会把握不住,但是看得见的成功不能放弃,他在爱因斯特实习的日子里帮助更多的学弟学妹办理出国申请,一手制作出了OEMSIEMS系统,使得材料包的申请、上传、更正、评估一体化,极大提高了工作效率并得以推广运用。问及Peter这时是什么心态,Peter颇有一种成大事者不拘小节的风度,说心里总是抱着一个理想,一定要去美国的,一定会去美国的,这样一种小小的火花伴随着他一直走过这一路。

    如果说五月花号邮轮见到自由女神像的那刻,仿佛见到了自由的象征,如果说在《Terminal》中,Tom Hanks跨出机场的一小步是对一个旧世界的终结和一个新世界的浮现,那么在20066月,Peter终于到达了美国,那一刻对他而言是最难忘的吧,除了兴奋也有苦尽甘来的快乐。上飞机前的那一刻问及Peter此时想的是什么,回答是“我最喜欢乘飞机了,爽”。

    美国三个月的实习很快就过去了,兴奋归来的Peter已经研三了,面临着找工作的他一路艰辛历程仍未结束,第一次面试便被计算机公司CEO相中,但一个问题“IBM有更高的工资你去吗?”来考察企业忠诚度的时候,非常不幸的与企业文化不相吻合被拒,11月份第二家计算机公司实习,三个月内实习最直接的感受便是工作强度大,没有发展前途,3月面微软,整整5轮面试都到了最后一关,被挂。。。人生充满了种种可能,也充满了无限无奈,直到34月又一轮工作高峰,面试群涌而至风生水起,Peter抓住大好时机一鼓作气进了爱立信,这个全球领先的提供端到端全面通信解决方案以及专业服务的供应商公司。但是上帝打开一扇门的同时,亦可能打开一扇窗。故事并没有结束,原先美国实习的公司老板突然呼唤Peter回去工作,并且高额聘请律师,对谁而言这都是很好的机会,然而Peter已经有了爱立信的工作在前并且签订了协约,其二,中国法律规定J1的签证2年之后才能继续办理工作签证,然而Peter刚回国一年都不到,怎么出去?事情就卡在这里了吗?班要继续上,美国这里的事双方都在想办法,一下子都miserable起来了,在这个节骨眼上,Peter锻造出了何不再申请J1签证的想法?这是个明智的选择,虽然J1只能签一年,但相对于每月5000刀的工资和对方的诚意,将这次出行顺利完成将是最大的宗旨。如今,Peter已顺利拿到去美的签证,并且将在12月出行,再一次去到美国,我们衷心地祝愿他前途坦荡一切顺利:)

    When I applied for an internship I got 3 offers. One of them was China. I was a little bit skeptic because it's so far away from my country. After few days of discussing I decided to go to China! Afterwards I found out why some of my friends and people who were in China suggested me to come here. Thank you all!
   
    When I arrived, Somsak, intern from Thailand, picked me up from the airport and helped me with all the formal things after my arrival. He and his knowledge of Chinese have been really helpful for all of us.
   
    When we arrived from the airport I realised that this country is completely different from any European country. It's almost imposible to describe the feelings when you suddenly, for the first time, meet with chinese way of writing in its full sense. Everywhere. I was also equaly supprised with traffic and food. Food is diferent in taste around China, and Shangai is characteristic for the sweet food. It took me almost two weeks to get used to it. Traffic is a little bit dangerous, mostly because of the bikes :), but when you adapt it could bring you more fun every morning runing to the office together with the river of people, bikes, etc...Chinese letters were the most interesting challenge for me! Very soon after my arriving my friend from China thought me how to write down Chinese characters, how to divide them and how to count lines in each of them. I was so proud whenever I successed  to find some word in Chinese-English dictionary without pinyin. Fascinating and exciting at the same time. But very disecouraging if we talk about the writing.
 
    During my internship I spent half of the time in IDSignet, local company for software development with such kind of organization that a lot of companies would anvy them. Most of employees speak English but are to shy to speak. Also I spent some time working in IAESTE office, where I had great opportunity to improve not only my computer skill but also my English, Chinese, as well as comunication skills through so many training, seminars, discussions etc. It helped me to consider myself as a team player and to found out what are my weakneses and goodnesses as a team player. Even working on quite different projects we helped to each other a lot. It helped me to understand their job as well. We also had some trainings about how to deal with some problems in future career. It was also good opportunity to meet so many peopple from all over the world and also from China.
 
   I had luck to share the apartment with other IAESTE interns from all over the World. That brought me new friends and chance to learn about diferent countries and cultures. I will miss a lot those moments when we were sitting together in our living room, chating or having dinner together. 
 
   During the working days, after work we used to go for a walk through Shanghai or to go together for a dinner while the weekend time we used to travel to other cities near Shanghai. Those traveling helped us to see not only busy life in Shanghai but more calm way of life in other provinces of China. One think I wouldd like to mention here is that it is impossible to stay in the street looking in your map longer then two minutes and no one to come to ask you in English if you need some help. They are so friendly and willing to help!
 
  Few weekends I spent walking around Shanghai. The most impresive thing I saw in Shanghai is Shanghai National Museum. Few days later I was only thinking how great your history is. Before I came to China I thought I knew a little bit about Chinese culture or history, but now I found out that I knew almost nothing, because I realised how rich both Chinese culture and history are! And that three months are not enough to even peek into it. These few months, were the most interesting longer period of my life. A period of fast learning and adapting. I cannot remember the night when I didn't want that day to last longer than 24h.
   
    There is a lot to say about China, but if one picture is aware for thousands words then the only way to describe China is to ask you to come here. I'd like to come here and stay longer next time!

intern VS/& Company

Case-

Here is the thing:一个叙利亚的22岁女生Maliam在上海一家建筑公司实习,实习期5个月,公司提供公寓(相当于1500元)住宿,及每月工资1500元,已工作到第四个月的时候,事情发生了。一日傍晚Maliam回到公寓发现家具已经清空,个人物品堆置在一间房间中散落在地,当时十分生气,与住在隔壁的公司总经理发生争执,并马上联系了爱因斯特人员。公司解释说,此间公寓已经出售,当日联系搬场公司搬出所有家居,但是没有办法联系到Maliam,所以才造成局面,公司方表示道歉。

这种意外在人生中冷不丁地就会发生,此时寻找最佳的途径解决,避免发生冲突并安置以后的工作,住处才是上策。但是语言交流不畅,以及Maliam的愤怒使得事情变的复杂。12日事发当天,Maliam表示愿意留下来继续工作,但是第二日表示不愿继续工作,并希望立即搬出公寓,希望公司承担一切损失,包括原定到实习期结束的工资1500元,住宿费1500元以及实习报告的签订,第三天,爱因斯特派出翻译人员,Maliam与公司协商时又提出需要公司提供住宿。几经改变后,公司方作出决定,希望双方不要再牵扯更多的精力。不需要Maliam继续工作下去,同意支付11月正常工资并补足至1500元,答应签署实习报告,但公寓已交付另一个买主,需要Maliam搬出。

短短三天内双方多次交涉,但仍然没有一个结果,我做中间调停人好多次,觉得问题出在双方没有很好地为对方考虑,Maliam一直非常生气认为公司的行为侮辱了她,提出的一切赔偿要求都是合理的,一定要公司照办不肯让步。公司方觉得协商就应该有让步,公司方不愿为了纠纷而扰乱所有的工作进程,签署实习报告的同时,答应只能在11月份工资和一个月住宿费中选其一。或许事情发生的确突然,但如果Maliam能够冷静看待这件事,用平静的方式商量日后在中国继续逗留的一个月,公司方反而会想办法帮助她度过这个困难,吵闹和争执只能把自己带向孤立的一方,与公司决绝对立的一方,公司反而认为你是否在要挟我什么而变得易激怒。语言不畅不是问题的关键,态度才是。

 态度决定一切,当事情已不可避免发生的时候,寻找最好的途径解决它!

Self Awareness

If you are crossing a street and see a big bus coming to your side, will you go out of the way?

How can you possibly insist standing in the middle of the street while danger is in front of your face?

 

Similar cases stroke me twice today.

 

A foreign student insisted that he could prolong his visa based on a visa officer word in his country, while we had reminded him two months ago that his country is one of the countries in the black list. He also went to the Visa Bureau and another government office few days ago and got rejected.

On the phone he kept saying that he could do it even the fact shows the vice versa.

 

Another local student was not available to be contacted for the whole day.

The background is : for all students who joined the SWT 2007, they would need to report themselves once they are back from USA.

We asked our students to submit their passports by Tuesday this week since it is a compulsory procedure from the US Embassy/Consulate.

All of the students have submitted by Tuesday and only one student did not submit this since he thought that this is not important. See, this is the mistake – if it is not important, why would we ask for it? If it is not important, why did we give a deadline? If it is not important why do the other students think that it is important?

He said that the passport should be sent by EMS from his hometown. Assuming that EMS will take about two days to arrive, we estimate that Thursday is still okay and we will go to the Embassy on Friday at noon.

The annoying is when I finally succeed to talk to him on the phone he was saying that he was busy, no time and had tried his best – while he didn’t even try to call us to inform about this delay!

I asked him to track the package and inform me back – also reminded him that post office usually have working time. About 5 pm he told me that he would give us tomorrow at 2pm because he is busy and have morning class.

We have the appointment at 2pm on Friday and he wants to come at our office at 2pm too. In the end I asked him to meet us at the Consulate Gate on Friday at 1pm.

So disappointed, I hang up the phone and writing this story. I want to share this because I think that it is stupid to keep standing on the position when you are proven to be wrong and even don’t let people to help just because you don’t want to change.

 

For any of this matter – I don’t gain any profit or benefit.

 

Just now the student called me and said that he can deliver his passport today. I could have been thankful of his effort in making this kind of progress, if only he didn’t say, “I am as busy as you, you know!”

I guess some people will never learn. The world is fair: we have earth and sky, rich and poor, successful and failure and something in between…

芬兰大学生的实习经历——异人眼中看到的问题

As I request, a student from Finland give me the report of his internship in China. It's not so positive when he tried to reflect his cultural-shock in the work environment, but I believe it will benefit the company's staff or other Chinese people to understand and improve ourselves to win the understanding and respect from people coming other countries.

Some thoughts about my internship period

My 10 weeks internship period in *** Company was very interesting. **** is a state owned enterprise and that fact alone gave thrilling wipes for this experience. Company provided me an apartment which was okay, normal Chinese style apartment. There was bus form my doorsteps to the company but I bought a bike, because I like cycling a lot. Company provided me free lunch at dining hall; food there was good even though variation between different weeks was not so great.

First days I tried to adapt to new environment and to my new colleagues. At first I was asked that what I would like to do. For me it was very strange question, because in my country when you take a intern you already have a task on your mind and when new person comes you tell him that you are going to do this this and this thing. Interns in Finland always replace a normal employee when he goes to enjoy his summer holiday. So we do the same things that normal guys will do. Cultural difference in deed and based on that I replied that I would like to do same things that you are doing.

So at the end of my first week I was asked that can I do 3D models from Autocad drawings. When I saw the software I was supposed to use and understood what I was asked to do I said that I can’t do this I’m not a designer. So I ended up doing some quite pointless research work from very restricted internet. My orders were to try to find something relating to new production technologies. Finding few articles was basically all I did during 10 weeks internship period. I don’t know why I was placed to this project team, but it was not the most suitable place for me. I know that my studies look a little bit confusing; I have two majors and a lot of completed courses. I think that someone didn’t understood what’s the difference between study program and a major. I’m studying in mechanical engineering study program, but my major is industrial engineering and if you look through my study records it’s quite easy to see that I’m not a designer. So again a communication error I think.

So I did what I did independently and all the others in my office were doing their own things. I was not a part of the team at any point and I felt that I’m in a way there. At the beginning I went to another production sites and wrote same kind of comparison between Finnish and Chinese production sites. But that was on a very general level because if I just go there to have a quick look what I can write about that? I don’t have thirty years expertise in engineering and manufacturing. But these visits were highlight of my internship period because it was very interesting to see these sites. I have to mention a funny story from my second production site visit in my first week. In the morning I went to a bathroom and when I came back my colleague told me that you have to go to another plant right now and write a report for next Monday, that’s it. And it was like bus will leave after 5 minutes so go now. My boss only shout me from the back that bye bye and so I went. From that moment I had the feeling that he liked best when I’m outside of the office and most issues were also spoke in that way that I was outside of the office when he told to someone to pass this information to me. So after one hour on a bus I arrived to this factory. I went there and waved my ID card around and asked from everyone who I saw that to you speak English, because in my opinion it’s not wise to go around the factory by myself without any guide. After all it was a casting plant so they handled liquid metal there. So I spend another hour trying to find out someone how could speak some English. My visit came without any warning to people working in this plant but I managed to find someone how could say some basic things in English. After lunch we did a tour around the factory but the most of the questions I asked she didn’t have required information or she couldn’t understand. 12.30 I took bus back to my office as I was ordered to do. Interesting experience but in Finland we handle things in a more professional way. There is no point to just go somewhere and it’s dangerous also in many places. So I proposed that next time I could at least go with my Chinese fellow student how also did factory visits. And we went once together which was a lot more effective way to do this.

At some point I spoke with human resource and they showed me a plan of my internship period. But why they didn’t show me this at the beginning? Why wait 5-6 weeks? Plan was something like to study this and learn something of this. That point I realized that they don’t have anything for me to do; they just want that I can read something and be here. And when I spoke to Chinese students they confirmed that usually employers don’t trust students so they don’t actually do anything, they just be there and try to learn something. Different culture and different ways of doing things but after that I started to think that maybe I should leave earlier. Travelling is my main interest and when I don’t even have anything to do why should I stay here. Final decision to leave earlier I made one morning when my boss wanted me to repair a window! I was like are you kidding, but now he was not. He told to my colleague that I should repair that window as soon as possible and he said to my colleague many times that ask from me that when I’m going to repair it. I could see from my colleague’s appearance that it was not a joke and she was in a very difficult position in the middle of this. Maybe my boss thought that I have broke that window or something, which of course I have not did, in Finland his behavior is called fucking with someone and it’s extremely rude so I went to HR and said that I’m leaving at the end of this month. They said okay and don’t worry about the window. I went back and told to my colleague that I will leave and please inform my boss. Only thing he replied was when I’m going to fix that window. Later that day I was transferred to another office inside same department. I don’t know if these incidents are related or not but I feel much better now. Of course I still don’t have tasks to do, but I have learned the rules of the house so I do my own things and try not to be on the way. Thanks to my own computer and almost private office I can entertain myself 8 hours without any problems J

A conclusion, a lot of communication problems I think. I think that the idea was to take in someone and just see how it goes. It went somehow; of course I have to admit that I failed to find my place form this department, so in the end I felt like outsider all the time. All in all it was very educational experience, but 10 weeks is definitely enough. In that time I learned everything I could from Chinese way to run and act in office. Professional experience point of view I didn’t learn a lot, but because I’m studying also management and in that point this was a valuable lesson of how about different kind of way to manage things.

My personal opinions for the cross-cultural problems are as follows:

1. It's very important of the Chinese companies that they shall give an orientation to a new staff:

As I know, many of the Chinese companies don't have a very good orientation. The orientation shall not be regarded as announcement of the company's rule or only introduce your colleauges or supervisor. A good orientation will include the following parts:

1)  Company's business and organizing structure
2)  Aim, Competitiveness, Challenge and future strategy
3)  Culture, Rules and daily work/Life important details
4)  Job for the new staff, work aim and evaluation system
5)  How to report to supervisor, How to get support from the colleagues
6)  Communication with new staff to make sure they can understand what's going on and what they shall do.

2. It's very important to stop the staff's situation that has no work or no task
It's popular that in the Chinese companies, all the managers are fully occupied and some new staff just have been assigned no work because of lack of skills or experience in the new work. It's reported that  over 70% of senior managers are overloaded in China so that result no coaching people of those new staff in the companies.

It's a dynasty that youth want to be respected and need to encouraged to obey the rule in the company. The youth will escape from the work if they feel ignored and meanless of work especially the foreigners. All the Chinese managers can't expect those youth will keep silence and not make troubles in the company and show respects to the authority like former years. So that all the Chinese companies shall think of how to avoid wasting the HR resource of those youth in the company. As I know, many of Chinese companies choose to not recruit youth without experience, then cause the bad cycle of manager's overwork. The whole China society shall review and improve our capability for developing the HR resource of those youth in a new way. It's said the youth are the future of a country and China will lose our competitiveness of future if we don't know how to utilize our youth HR resource.

3. The best way of improving the communication is from both side
The bad part of the employment during the foreign interns is supervisors don't know how to issue task to foreign students, then the good part is they can propose what they can do and they want to do to explore their understanding and interests.
It's usually very comfortable for foreigners that your supervisors can't play their role to issue the work properly, but actually it's the best chance to develop personal leadership for a youth if they can overcome the cultural tends from their countries. There are other very successful cases that foreign students have done great job surprised the companies, usually those students are very flexible and have the consciousness to organize work themselves by communicating with supervisors properly.

Then how to develop the skills to approach the Chinese manangers, it shall be the most interesting and biggest meaningful part of foreign interns' experience in China. I will work hard to help all the interns, but I want to remind all the people:

Nobody can approach others if you feel their behaviour and styles are weird. So have the interests to accept different people is the precondition of cross-cultural success.  Therefore, there are many failure cases are aroused by the  foreigners’ unwillingness to change the way they are comfortable with in communication.

Anyway, foreigners are more willing to share their feelings, like this student's long article to express himself to me. So Chinese shall learn from those foreigner's positive attitude, because only frank expression will lead to understand, and no share actually means no confidence to the others. Then I will try to share all of you of those successful cases to prove:

There is no misunderstandings if we can communicate well.
There is no way to figure out  a successful team if we have no willingness to communicate.

   组织此次活动的爱因斯特(中国)秘书长郭涵芳告诉记者,目前大学生与企业界的接触往往仅限于实习或者招募面试等,但在这种环境下,大学生很难和来自企业 的代表进行自由平等的交流。而在海外一些发达国家,就经常会组织一些企业和学生代表共同参与的活动,不仅给企业提供了独特的商业人际网络和大学生招募机 会,也提供了企业与大学生自由开放交流的机会。
  据悉,“ONE联壹活动”将以共进晚餐形式进行,企业的人力资源负责人将与大学生代表及高校就 业、教务部门代表在轻松、双向的交流氛围中共享沟通的乐趣。该活动目前已经吸引到如西门子、虹桥机场等多家知名企业的参与,并已预订了5桌丰盛晚餐。参与 的学生也已在各大高校展开了招募、筛选工作,原计划邀请35位—40位学生参与,现已全部报满。

天花板漏水了,不过爱因斯特的天还不能塌下来.....

唐老师冲过来说,Fanfan你来看看新大陆阿....我马上问,是好的新大陆还是坏的?她说当然是坏的,然后我去看到门口的LOGO标志墙上面霉掉一大块,唐老师和Ellen说,奇怪,昨天还没有的,怎么今天就霉掉了?我一看,心想大事不好,叫唐老师马上叫物业来看,然后果然证实是漏水了。

当年装修的工人把检修孔开在错位处,必须马上找人重新开天花板维修,这么巧的是隔壁刚搬家,把隔壁的工人叫来,开始把天花板拆卸。自从搬进来2年不到,天花板不同地方漏了3次,我跟物业抱怨,工作人员说——这个大楼都建了10年了.......我联想到今天去了**大学的巨大校园,我当时跟Venny说,我们中国建了这么多大楼,可怜很多人要沦为清洁工,因为需要维护清洗的大楼实在太多了。早上才说的话,现在就砸在我的头上了!

天花板一直修到晚上,期间我不在,回来的时候听工人说,物业也没搞清哪里漏水,就拿了胶带把漏水的管道全部包包就算了。我知道的时候,工人已经把破开的天花板糊上了,我问他怎么可以还没搞清楚就做回去了?他说他也不知道,他只管把天花板放回去,我倒!

不得不提的是我今天接到的一个电话,某申请土耳其并且被录取的同学,因为申请的实习原来在暑假被拖延了,所以他不想去实习了,然后来问给他能否安排一个德国的实习机会。我问他知不知道他的放弃给我们带来一个Offer的损失?能不能协助我们寻找合适的替代者?或者他自己延后到寒假去实习? 他显然根本没想到我的这些问题,一直给自己辩解,说在暑假等了很久,寒假觉得再去也没有意义,还有他自己不可能找得到人......

Venny今天在我的Office接到一个电话,一个已经被西班牙接受的中国学生,要求直接和对方教授联系,延迟原定的实习时间。Venny挂了电话的时候跟我说,为什么这个学生一再打电话来重复她的要求,Venny从一开始就告诉她如果已经被接受了,还要推迟实习,那么对方教授就可能因此取消她的实习资格,于是她就开始推托,先是说签证出了问题,经过爱因斯特西班牙协助后,她又说是时间有问题,总之,不断找出其他理由来试图延迟,而不承认是她自己要延迟,还不肯承受可能的相应实习被取消的后果。

从这两个中国学生的Case,说明他们的规则观念是没有的。做好的约定,签订的协议,承诺的实习时间,如果因为自己这方的条件改变了,那么打破规则是他们毫不犹豫地选择,而试图摆脱自己要承担的责任,也是他们毫不犹豫的正常反应。

今天还听说,有的家长在孩子填报大学志愿后,去跟老师理论说,自己的孩子不懂事,当时志愿是乱填的,要求重新更改,还有的家长半夜三更给老师打电话,因为找不到自己的孩子,报出自己的孩子的大概地址后就逼着老师去马上找到.....想想跟他们比,第一绝对数量没有他们大,其次责任也没有他们承担那么大,我想我还们算幸运的。今天中午跟大学老师吃饭时听他们评价说,现在的大学生根本不在乎别人怎么,只知道自己的需求,不管自己的行为后果给人家造成的损失和应该做的补偿意识。然后老师跟我说,没有规则意识,不尊重别人的工作,这个不是大学生的问题,是整个社会的问题......

今天早上我跟Venny去学校拜访的时候,一个外国男子看我们在说英语,先问Venny是不是找不到复旦(因为她替我拎着复旦大学的袋子),后来发现我不是Venny路遇的试图帮助她找路的陌生人后,又开始说起熟练的普通话。我让Venny问后,发现他是加拿大人,在上海待了4年,他用普通话和上海话分别表示了他的中文能力,然后他一起的一个中国女子夸我的英文很好,他听说我做跨文化交流的工作时候,他说I can understand your feeling,然后他跟我们表示他对中国文化不能适应,比如地铁里推来挤去的人们,还有在他住处附近骂街的老太太邻居。

我感觉到他对中国人和社会的不屑,当他再次表示I can understand your feeling,然后用一种不屑一顾的眼光环顾地铁车厢的时候,我突然说I don't think you can understand,然后告诉他,If you don't like China, why come here? 他大概感觉到了,下车的时候跟我们说他昨晚喝醉了,很晚才睡,人不大舒服,然后就跟我们拜拜了。

这不是我看到的第一个蔑视中国人的外国人,我们自己的外国实习生,也会有些学生因为中国企业或者身边的人存在不尊重人和规则的普遍现象,失去对我们的国家和民族的尊重。在我看来,中国民族从来没有这么的经济快速发展,也从来没有过如此的价值体系和社会规则遵守意识的混乱过,而且因为缺乏长期的双赢合作意识,装修工人偷工减料,大学生骑驴找马浪费我们的实习机会,企业缺乏对人的信心只需要工具而不是人才.....所以一切现象,本质都是一致的。

当然,中国的天永远不会塌下来,股市照样涨,房市照样热,不过人的生存质量,那份对承诺的严肃和诚挚,因为被我们中国人自己不知道扔到哪个角落去了,所以我们还得承受被外国人看轻的后果!

中国式家长(不得不续)

电话响了,Qin来找我,“Fanfan,有个家长很着急的样子,你来跟她说吧...”

然后一个妈妈在电话里告诉我,她的女儿跟家里约好了要在9月7日通可视电话,但是说好了时间没有通上,家里很着急。因为昨天的经验,我就告诉她应该没有关系的,不要太担心,然后问她女儿去了多久了,她说7月份就去了,9月7日是她孩子最后一天上班,预计9月11日返回中国。我一听就觉得晕阿,忍不住就问她都去了那么久了,就一个电话没通上何必那么着急啊。但是这个妈妈显然不要听我的安慰,只是硬要我按照她有的那个爱因斯特德国的电话直接帮她马上通话,因为打了电话去,但不会德文所以没法交流。

我就告诉她,我只能发email,除非有什么急事,否则对方一是跟我们有时差,二是毕竟没什么大事,搞得大家都紧张实在没有必要,而且也许等我费尽周折找到她女儿,说不定他们已经都联系上了。这个妈妈看没法说服我,就差爸爸上阵了,这个爸爸还算比较通情达理些,同意我先发Email的建议了。

这个电话花了我大概10分钟,但是我觉得沟通效率极低,我说的话家长估计听进去20%都不到,而且因为我不愿意为他们打电话折腾,还也许让家长们很不高兴了。

晚上6点半,我和Teresa还在处理新公布的瑞士、日本的4个Offer的时候,我问Teresa信写了没,她说写了,而且那个妈妈又电话去问她了。Teresa说这是最近几天的第3个家长了,我就奇怪说,除了昨天的还有谁啊,然后我从她那里知道的家长故事还有更离谱的如下:

某爸爸紧急致电,说没法联系上孩子,然后妈妈再来询问,经过Terea了解核查,才发现这个孩子才上飞机,然后Teresa告诉家长孩子关机的原因。之后家长几个小时后又来问为什么还是没有消息,Teresa告诉他们至少要飞十多个小时,然后父母还是不断向我们工作人员表达他们的焦急心情。

某学生已经自己离开前往海外实习,直到第二天,他爸爸才带着N5b表来交给我们。——N5b表示要求学生在被接受后2周内返还,并且要让我们通知对方接待时间的文件,后来也不知道他到那里是如何接上头了。

有时候我在听电话,试图安慰家长的时候,总是在做这种无效沟通,然后偶尔我都觉得恍惚中,我不知道我到底是国际组织的秘书长还是中国幼儿园园长.........I am international baby sitter................

中国式家长 Chinese Parents

我在等电梯的时候,一个中年男人走进了爱因斯特中国办公室。我正准备离开,但是看到他很焦急把一个文件包递给Teresa要求帮助。

"Hm...也许有什么很严重的事情发生了",我想。
于是我走回办公室,准备面对那些爱因斯特的工作中,我每天需要面对的麻烦事情。

他是一个正在西班牙作爱因斯特实习的中国学生的父亲,他的儿子4天前到西班牙了,开始2天每天和他通话,但是后来2天就失去联系了。现在父母都很着急得觉也睡不着,最后决定来我们这里寻求帮助。

"谢天谢地,没有什么大事发生...." 我听清后松了一口气。
"不要着急,我们会尽快找到您的儿子让他联系您。中国学生经常这样的,一般是因为出去旅游了或者是因为觉得电话费太贵..." 我尽力安慰着这个父亲,但是显然我的说服力不够,因为他把我的解释理由都一一否决了。
"他不可能出去旅游的,他才到西班牙阿!他也不可能没有电话卡和钱的,因为他前面两天都在给我们电话的...."然后我就跟Teresa说,叫Venny马上联系爱因斯特西班牙,通知这个学生马上联系他爸爸。

当我和他一起离开办公室的时候,我建议他不要太担心自己的儿子。
"您的孩子都是成年人了,这是很好的锻炼自己生存能力的机会", 我跟他说。
"不行的,他都不会自己烧饭的,我还要在电话里教他怎么烧菜呢",这个父亲跟回答。
然后我说," OK, 这是您让他自己处理问题的最好机会了,他必须学习了"。这个父亲这次没有反驳我,但是我知道他心里肯定还是不接受我的建议的。

一个可怜的中国式家长,因为2天没有儿子的信息就急得觉都睡不着。他那么老远的赶来找我们,甚至不是用电话联系我们,当我告诉他"你带着的资料里面有我们的联系电话,您可以给我们电话"时,他说 "喔,我宁可自己过来,这样少些担心。"

一天后,Venny从爱因斯特西班牙得知,这个学生是因为电话卡上没钱了所以没打电话,显然他不知道2天没有信息给他父亲是多么紧急的事件,他还让我们转告他父亲他没事的。然后我跟Venny说,叫他马上给他爸爸电话。因为他父亲要的不是没打电话的原因,而是听到声音确定他没有安全问题。

Kelly说,"Oh, 为什么中国家庭保持着这么紧密的关系,造成孩子和父母双方这么大的压力和痛苦呢?"所有年轻人都同意她的话,但是我猜大部分家长是不同意的。
这大概就是所谓的"代沟"或者"文化差异吧", 无论对错,我们必须理解和忍耐这些,然后我们员工也因此必须承担桥梁功能.......

A middle age man came into IAESTE CHINA office when I was waiting in the elevator.
I was about to leave when I saw he gave a folder to Teresa and seemed to be very anxious in asking for help.

Hmm, maybe there is something very serious happened.... I thought.
Then I came back office and prepared to face very severe and troublesome matters which I have to prepare to face everyday in IAESTE work.

He is father of one Chinese student who is taking IAESTE internship in Spain now. His son arrived Spain about 4 days ago. The student called back his father in the beginning 2 days then lost contact with him for the later 2 days. Now both the parents could sleep very well and finally the father is coming to ask urgent help.

"Thanks god! It's not big deal...." I thought when I got to know the whole matter.
"Don't worry, we will try to find your son and inform him to contact u ASAP. It's always happening of Chinese students and usually it's due to some travel or concerns of expensive telephone fee..." I tried to comfort the father but obviously I am not convincing enough, because the father killed all my explanations.
"It's impossible for him to travel, he just arrived Spain. It's also impossible he didn't have money to call me, because he just bought a new card and has called me in the first 2 days...." Then I told Teresa to tell Venny to contact IAESTE Spain immediately and inform the son to contact his father ASAP.

When we left office together, I suggested him not worry too much about his son.
"Your son is adult and I believe it's the good chance of him to be alone and survive himself." I said.
"No, he even't can't cook and I have to teach him how to cook in the call." The father told me.
Then I said, " OK, it's great chance you let him deal with the food problem and he will learn if he has to". The father didn't be defensive at my words but I knew he just gave up because he didn't want to against me.

One of the poor Chinese parent, who can't sleep due to no news from his son in 2 days. He came from far away place to get news instead of calling us, when I told him there is our call number in the documents he has taken with us, he said " Oh, I prefer to come to make myself feel less worries".
Then 1 day later, Venny got reply from IAESTE Spain that the son didn't call because he has no money in the telephone card and he didn't realize the urgency that his news shall be sent to his father. The student told us to forward the information to his father, and I told Venny tell the student to call his father because the parents don't want the reason but just want to hear his voice to confirm his safety.

Kelly said "Oh, why the Chinese family shall have such an intensive relationship that cause stress and pain both to the Child and the parents".
All the young people including me agree, but I guess most of the parents in that age don't agree.
So that's so called "generation gap" or "cultural different", no matter it's right or wrong, you have to understand and tolerate it. And our staff including me have to be the role to bridge it.......
